Feedback to the EU Commission: Include horsemeat in the EU Common Market Organisation
The EU Commission is currently revising Regulation (EU) No. 1308/2013, which regulates trade in agricultural products. This regulation plays a crucial role when it comes to harmonised marketing standards for agricultural products that enter the European market - including meat. For example, it is about being able to seamlessly trace the origin of products.a
However, horsemeat is not mentioned in the draft! Our research shows that there are massive problems with traceability, animal welfare and food safety, especially with horsemeat from North and South America. Because horsemeat has such complex supply chains, it is particularly important to be able to trace its origin.
We therefore call on the EU to include horsemeat in the ‘Common Market Organisation’ (CMO)! This would create clear marketing standards, protect consumers and should prevent horsemeat produced under cruel conditions from entering the EU.
You can find our position on the draft here.
You can also submit your feedback here. You have until 10 March to do so. Together we can make a difference - for the animals, for the consumers, for more transparency!
