OE24.TV reports on our investigation into blood farms in South America

The OE24.TV animal welfare magazine “Unsere Tiere” reports on our investigative research into blood farms in Uruguay and Argentina. The Mercosur Agreement is intended to facilitate trade between the EU and countries such as Argentina and Uruguay – however, it does not provide for binding animal welfare standards along the production chains. It is precisely against this backdrop that our research plays an important role in raising awareness.

The footage shown documents the suffering of pregnant mares, from which large amounts of blood are regularly taken to extract the hormone PMSG – an active ingredient used in industrial pig breeding. Renowned experts classify the documented practices as veterinarily unacceptable and legally inadmissible.

The article also addresses the shared responsibility of European countries, as PMSG is also used in the EU. Against the backdrop of the Mercosur agreement, OE24.TV explains that economic pressure on producers without binding animal welfare requirements could continue to increase under the agreement.

Practices such as blood sampling from pregnant mares are indirectly encouraged as long as PMSG continues to be in demand and used. We therefore call for a ban on the production, import, and use of PMSG in the EU.
