Austrian Media Report on the Transport of Unweaned Calves

Various Austrian media outlets reported extensively on the latest investigation by ‘The Marker’ and ‘SOKO Tierschutz’ over the weekend. The two organisations conducted an extensive investigation and uncovered how unweaned calves from Austria were transported to a fattening farm in Spain – in some cases for up to 22 hours!

We also contributed crucial evidence to the investigation.  The loading lists we submitted prove that after fattening, the animals were shipped to third countries such as Libya, Lebanon or Egypt for slaughter.

The findings of the research caused a media uproar and public outrage in Austria. Unfortunately, however, these are far from isolated cases. Time and again, we prove that unweaned calves are transported for far too long. The maximum transport time for these young animals is 8 hours. Unfortunately, exporting animals to third countries after up to a year of fattening in Spain is also common practice in the EU. 

We therefore call for a stop to live animal exports to third countries and a limit of 4 hours on the transport of unweaned calves!
