On the way to Zemale in the north of Lithuania, where there is a calf assembly centre, a truck of a Dutch transport company drives past us in direction south, loaded with calves. The temperature is -13.0°C. According to recommendations of the EU Commission, unweaned animals should not be dispatched for long-distance transport today as the outside temperature is below 0°C. When we arrive at the assembly centre in Zemale, there are no long-distance transporters. At 16:45, on the way back to the Polish border, we spot the truck of the German company that we have been waiting for since yesterday and we follow. All ventilation flaps are closed on both sides. The outside temperature is now -10°C. Shortly before the Polish border, the drivers stop at a petrol station and we spot another truck of the same company. They both cross the border at 20:00. We follow the second truck, which consists of a lorry and trailer. It also has all ventilation flaps closed. At 21:00 it starts snowing and the road is soon covered by snow.
