In the morning our team goes back to inspect animal trucks at the parking lot near the border. The calves that have been unloaded yesterday evening are back in the trailer, while other trucks from the same company are unloaded. Due to the small size of the outdoor pens, only a very small percentage of the animals waiting in Kapikule can get out of the trucks. There is only space for four truck loads at a time.
In the afternoon a truck with pregnant heifers arrives from the Czech Republic. We ask the drivers to turn on the water system and ventilation. The heifers are really thirsty, trying to drink from the metal nipples and fighting with each other over the little bit of water coming out of them. Even though today it is cloudy, the temperature is still 32°C and sticky. Later in the afternoon it starts to rain. The small outdoor pens do not have any roof, so there is no protection for the animals from rain or sun. We film calves standing in the muddy pens, soaked from the heavy rain.
