We are joined today by a journalist and a photographer from the Netherlands. They want to make a report about the conditions at the Turkish border that we have been seeing year after year.
Today we inspect 23 trucks in total but many more pass the border without us having the opportunity to look inside. Fattening calves coming from Slovakia are transported in very dirty conditions and are so crowded that there is not enough space for them to lie down. Many animals have irritated eyes from the high level of ammonia. In a truck carrying pregnant heifers from Germany, we observe milk dripping from the udder of one of them meaning that the delivery of the calf will be soon. Some cattle do not have enough headroom at all and touch the ceiling with their head or back. On another truck loaded with pregnant heifers from Lithuania, one of them is panting heavily, a clear sign of heat stress. Again a day with an endless row of suffering animals.
