Uruguay | Treinta y Tres | Slaughterhouse Agroindustrial Del Este | Horsemeat import

We arrive at the slaughterhouse in Treinta y Tres at 11:15. From the road, we detect horses in the stunning chute that leads up to the entrance of the building. We are very surprised to see horses being slaughtered today as we have heard from different sources that this plant is currently not allowed to slaughter horses.

We present ourselves at the reception building and ask to visit the plant, but unfortunately we are denied entry. Nobody would be allowed to visit without the permission of the director. We very much regret not being able to see the handling of the horses, which was very poor during our visit last year. All we can see from outside the premises is that water is still used to move the horses up the stunning chute. After a while, a worker comes out of the building with an electric prod but he sees us immediately, what probably prevents him from using the prod.
