Together with our partner organisation Animals’ Angels USA, we have been monitoring the auction in New Holland for many years. Our complaints have led to no less than three convictions of animal cruelty.
When we arrive today at 10:00, we first check the conditions for the animals inside the sheep and goat barn. The pens are extremely crowded and we find a great number of dead animals. More dead goats have been carelessly discarded in the parking lot. We find the same scenario inside the pig and cattle barn. Although the pens are very crowded and the temperature is extremely hot in the barn, all of the water troughs are empty. The smell of ammonia is almost unbearable. Several pigs have died inside the pens clearly without any assistance or care from auction workers.
We note that Bruce Rotz and Brian Moore already have horses inside their trailers before the sale. The eight horses inside Rotz’s trailer are agitated and can be heard and seen kicking the trailer sides. Four of those horses are already tagged for slaughter. They are very thin and the slaughter tags appear worn, so it is likely that these animals are “rejects” that have been turned away at the Canadian border and are now on their way back to Rotz’s premises to be shipped again.
All of the kill buyers in attendance purchase enough horses to fill their loads. Several groups of loose, unhandled horses are sold and go straight to the kill buyers. One of the horses has a bleeding facial injury, most likely from transport. Another one is severely emaciated.
We remain gravely concerned regarding the number of animals dying while at this auction. Our partner Animals’ Angels will once again report all violations to enforcement agencies.
