Our new research into six Icelandic blood farms shows the systematic cruel treatment of horses in the production of the fertility hormone PMSG (Pregnant Mare Serum Gonadotropin). We have been documenting the cruelty on these farms for years and the situation of the animals has not improved.

The new footage from September 2024 shows how the semi-wild mares are subjected to massive stress and pain during blood collection. The animals are beaten, poked with sticks and boards and separated from their foals. The mares' heads are tied up in unnatural positions, which leads to an increased risk of injury, especially in the sensitive neck area of the animals.

In 2022, the pharmaceutical company Isteka was granted a license to manufacture PMSG for a further three years. Following a complaint from us, the EFTA Surveillance Authority took action and issued a warning to Iceland. Due to an EFTA infringement procedure, blood sampling for PMSG production has been considered an animal experiment in Iceland since November 2023. An animal experiment can only be approved if it is essential. However, under pressure from Isteka, the Icelandic Veterinary Authority MAST decided that the company's license will remain valid until October 2025.

We want to end the production and use of the cruel hormone PMSG. A first step is for the public to learn about this and put pressure on the Icelandic government. Help us with your signature to do so.
