Spain | Altorricon | Fattening farms for calves
Our team visited two farms in Altorricon, Huesca region, in order to find calves that were trailed in July from Germany to Spain. The aim is to document how many of them survived the long distance transport and to see the conditions they are kept in.
Unfortunately we cannot find any of these calves from July, but instead other calves imported from Germany. The holding conditions on both farms are generally in compliance with legislation. Most of the calves in these farms come from France, Germany and Austria, some are from Spain. The calves are imported as suckling calves (under 8 weeks old) and are fed with milk replacer until they are eight weeks old. Gradually they are weaned and introduced to straw and corn silage. They are fattened until they are 10 months old and then slaughtered in Spain or exported to Lebanon. Our team will continue investigating the welfare of young calves that are transported from Germany to Spain.
