In the early afternoon, we arrive at the estancia “El Yatay” of the company Syntex in the hinterland of Treinta y Tres. After the blood extraction which takes place at the estancia “Loma Azul” in Florida, mares are brought here for recovery. Some give birth to their foals in order to ensure a steady supply of young mares for the production of PMSG. In the eucalyptus plantation close to the farm, we observe a group of 15 young mares, which are about two years old. They are very scared of us and immediately run away when we approach.
The custodian of the farm remembers us from our visit last year. He tells us that he is mainly responsible for the care of young mares, which are covered by a stallion some day and then brought to the farm “Loma Azul”. In general, the horses would not be transported to the farm in Florida but moved there by gauchos on horseback (200 km).
According to the custodian, the company Syntex has more than 3.000 mares at various locations. He explains that some mares that were brought here after the blood extraction looked quite good and recovered very quickly. Those can be used more than three years. He says it depends on the quality of the blood, some mares keep up longer than others. He does not know how much blood is taken, but says it is just like with humans, if the blood is no good, they die faster. In the end, he states that they no longer bring here a lot of horses because the pastures yield nothing anymore.
