Belgium | Horsemeat import | Success

We have handed over the results of our investigations to our partner organization in Belgium, GAIA, so they can support our efforts against the import of horsemeat from torturous production. Now GAIA has informed us about another success: The retailer Delhaize no longer sells horsemeat from overseas. After Lidl, Makro and Colruyt, Delhaize is now the fourth supermarket chain in Belgium that stops selling horsemeat from torturous production. Delhaize took this decision because our investigations clearly demonstrate that neither animal welfare nor traceability can be guaranteed in North and South America.

GAIA is going to continue their campaign until all Belgian retailers stop the import of horsemeat from overseas, as in the case of Switzerland. Now GAIA is increasing the public pressure on the six supermarket chains that continue selling imported horsemeat although they are well informed about the cruel production methods. GAIA calls on them to follow the good example of Delhaize and has started an online protest action.
