Canada | Québec | Viande Richelieu Inc. | Horsemeat import

Our team observes the “Viande Richelieu, Inc.” plant for two days. This is one of just two horse slaughter plants in Quebec approved for export to the European Union. During our visit, there is very little activity. The holding pen area consists of a simple, metal covered shed-like structure. No fans are installed to provide cooling on a hot summer day or relief from the countless flies pestering the horses. During our observations, we witness several groups of horses being moved with whips into this area, where they are apparently kept until plant workers are ready to slaughter them.

On the second day we see a group of horses in an extremely overcrowded pen. The horses do not have any room whatsoever to move around. Several are observed coughing and have snotty noses. No food or water is observed in the pen. We will continue to monitor this facility.
